Balancing the Books and the (Soccer) Ball

By: Erica Foreman

My name is Erica Foreman and I just completed my sophomore year at Manor College. I will be coming back in the fall to pursue my bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. For my first year at Manor I was nervous like any other freshman college student would be. I was worried if I chose the right school, if I would like my professors and if I would succeed. After the first few weeks I knew I made the right choice! I loved the environment, the faculty, and the students. Everyone was so welcoming and made me feel at home. IMG_8805

During my sophomore year, the Women’s Soccer team started up again at Manor, so I happily joined. I got to play the sport I love, with a great team and coach and we had a fun season! Just recently at the sports awards ceremony, I was awarded the Women’s Soccer Coach’s Award.

Juggling academics and athletics wasn’t always easy.  There were days I had to go right from classes to practice or sometimes even miss practice.  I tried my best to attend as many practices as possible. Many teachers were very understanding when I had to leave class a few minutes early to catch the bus for an away game.  I kept my grades up and always put my academics first.  There were some late nights typing papers and taking tests, but it was all worth it to play the game I love. Here are some tips I have for students who are thinking about joining an athletic team:

1.) Put school first.  It’s important to remember that your education is crucial.  Sports are important, but getting grades comes first.

2.) Communicate with your professors.  Talk with them at the beginning of the semester and let them know you’re an athlete but that you will make sure your work is turned in on time.

3.) Make time for yourself.  Being a student athlete means you will be busy most of the time! Making time each day to watch your favorite Netflix show or read a good book is a great way to relax.

I am looking forward to coming back to Manor in the Fall to pursue my Bachelor’s degree and to continue to play soccer at an amazing school, with an amazing coach and teammates – go Blue Jays!
